By the time my girlfriend told me she was pregnant, I had already decided I wanted out. I didn't want children, and I didn't want a life tied permanently to someone I no longer loved. So I lied. I invented a family history of genetic illness. I claimed doctors had warned me never to have children. I watched her struggle between her beliefs and the fear I planted. In the end, she agreed to end the pregnancy for my sake. That should have been the moment I stopped. It wasn't.
