The Letter I Never Posted On

My flatmate and I both applied for the same trainee role at a design firm. We stayed up late helping each other with portfolios, practising interview answers, talking about how we'd celebrate if one of us got in. The email arrived on a Monday morning while he was in the shower. It wasn't for me. It was for him. An offer. Start date attached. Without thinking, I forwarded it to my own address, deleted it from the shared computer, and said nothing. Two weeks later I got a different job and moved out. He never knew the offer had existed. Last I heard, he'd given up on design altogether. I still wonder who he might have become if I'd just let that message land.
