Stayed Out, Not a Target

I watched the jokes pile onto one person and did nothing. I didn't join in much, which I used to tell myself meant I was better than the rest. But I stayed. I benefited from being on the safe side. When they stopped coming around, I felt a flicker of guilt and then pushed it down. Silence felt like safety, until it didn't.
