I texted saying I was unwell so I wouldn't have to attend a family thing I dreaded. Nothing was wrong with me physically, but the idea of going felt exhausting. They replied with concern and offers of help, which made the lie heavier. I stayed home scrolling and watching TV, half-enjoying the quiet and half-feeling like I'd stolen sympathy I hadn't earned.
