I knew I was done but I stayed. I let them plan weekends, comfort me, make tea, listen to my worries. I gave just enough affection to keep things steady while I quietly detached. When they asked if something was wrong, I said they were imagining it. I took the stability they offered and paid them back with half-truths. When it finally ended, they said they felt like they'd been living next to a stranger. That hit because it was true, and I let it happen.
