I saw the message and decided not to answer. Hours later I replied with a breezy apology about being busy and missing it. They accepted it, but I could feel the thinness of it. I do this when I want to stay liked without committing to anything. It makes me look polite while keeping control. The more I do it, the more hollow my apologies sound, even to me.
